Type of Invention

This is your estimation of how easy it is to communicate in a document your invention to a person such as a Patent Judge who may not understand the technology.

Simple Mechanical Invention - eg. small toy, lathe stand.

Medium Technical Complexity - eg. machine and simple control, some bio-sciences.

Techically Complex - eg. more complex bio-sciences, multi-component machines employing ten or more drawings with inter-relating parts, complex electrical or electronic inventions.

Features

Number of Essential Features - This is the minimum number of features a competitor would need to copy the invention in its rudimentary or basic form and excludes optional refinements. If you take the example of a mouse trap, the mouse trap includes a base, a spring, a bait holder and a spring retainer to hold the trap set; all of these are essential and represent the "irreducible complexity" of the mouse trap. If you leave any one out then the mouse trap will not work. You need to reduce your invention to its minimum not its best.

Number of important optional features - Those important extra features that give the invention its best or most advantageous form, particularly from a market point of view. You should not include trivial or common knowledge.

Number of drawings needed to represent idea - This is the number of drawing figures required to clearly illustrate all essential and optional features that you have listed above. Quite often more than one feature can be covered with a single drawing.

The Patent Cost Calculator relies on subjective information input by the user and does not constitute a quote. Should a quote be required please submit your request by email to: patents@intellepro.com.au

* Since preparing this calculator a government acceptance fee is payable after examination and before grant  and is subject to the number of claims in the final patent consequently it is not possible to include this in the estimate. Attorney and government fees at acceptance range from AU$490 upwards at $40 for each claim in excess of 20.  A service fee of $140 applies to processing the final patent deed.
